The Assistant General Manager serves as Manager on Duty and is responsible for safe, compliant, accurate, and customer-focused store operations. The Manager directs assigned employees, manages escalations, oversees cash and inventory controls, completes operational reporting, and ensures STASH standard operating procedures are followed throughout the shift.
This is a hands-on leadership position. Managers are expected to work alongside the team, maintain leadership coverage in critical positions, make timely operating decisions within company policy, document performance concerns, draft corrective actions for General Manager approval, and communicate material issues to the General Manager.
All Assistant General Managers must be registered with the Maryland Cannabis Administration and must obtain and display a valid MCA agent identification badge before performing any work on the licensed premises.
What you’ll own
Store and Shift Management
- Serve as Manager on Duty and direct the opening, daily operation, handoff, and closing of the dispensary.
- Assign positions, breaks, cleaning responsibilities, audits, receiving duties, fill coverage, and other shift priorities.
- Oversee the sales floor throughout the shift and ensure employees remain in their assigned positions or receive approval before changing positions.
- Maintain appropriate leadership coverage in fill and ensure drive-thru, curbside, and kiosk orders receive priority.
- Monitor customer wait times, employee performance, workflow, safety, and completion of required checklists and logs.
- Resolve customer complaints, return questions, policy disputes, staffing issues, and operating disruptions within approved authority.
- Conduct daily huddles, communicate expectations, and provide coaching, recognition, and documented performance feedback.
- Draft corrective actions and deliver them to employees after review and approval by the General Manager.
- Escalate serious employee relations matters and recommendations for further discipline to the General Manager.
- Perform additional duties related to dispensary operations and management as assigned by the General Manager.
- Assist with Dispensary Marketing/Advertising as requested by the General Manager
Compliance Security and Incident Response
- Maintain strict compliance with MCA regulations, COMAR Title 14, Subtitle 17, and all STASH standard operating procedures.
- Ensure employees correctly verify identification, medical-patient status, purchase limits, product accuracy, and transaction eligibility.
- Respond to suspected diversion, theft, straw purchasing, impairment, security threats, cash concerns, and other reportable incidents.
- Ensure incident reports are factual and complete and that relevant camera numbers, footage-review times, evidence, and notifications are documented.
- Follow emergency, panic-button, alarm, access-control, surveillance, and law-enforcement response procedures.
- Immediately notify the General Manager of material compliance, inventory, cash, employee, safety, or security issues.
- When an authorized regulator arrives, verify credentials, notify appropriate leadership, support the authorized inspection process, and ensure requested records are preserved and produced through approved STASH procedures.
Inventory Receiving and Product Control
- Open and complete daily category audits in Sweed, assign counts, review results, require recounts, investigate discrepancies, and complete the audit report.
- Oversee receiving, product creation, labeling, barcoding, pricing, stocking, storage, transfers, returns, waste, and inventory adjustments as assigned.
- Ensure all cannabis movement is accurately reflected in Sweed and, through system integration, in METRC seed-to-sale tracking.
- Verify product labels, package identifiers, weights, freshness, packaging integrity, and storage conditions.
- Coordinate deliveries and ensure manifests and receiving records are accurate and retained.
- Support full inventory counts, green-waste procedures, variance investigations, and corrective action.
Cash Reporting and Administration
- Oversee drawer preparation, register counts, takeovers, reconciliation, change-bank verification, deposit preparation, deposit documentation, and secure deposit storage.
- Investigate and document register overages, shortages, and unresolved discrepancies, including review of relevant footage when appropriate.
- Complete or verify closing reports, sales-ledger entries, tip documentation, timecard review, attendance and compliance tracking, and follow-up notes.
- Ensure operational records, photographs, audit reports, incident reports, receipts, and supporting documents are stored in the approved company location.
- Protect confidential employee, customer, patient, financial, and security information.
Customer Experience and Team Development
- Set the standard for welcoming, accurate, and judgment-free customer service.
- Coach employees on product knowledge, terpenes, cannabinoids, dosing considerations, consumption methods, and compliant customer communication.
- Ensure employees never provide medical advice, diagnose conditions, or make therapeutic claims.
- Train and develop employees across reception, sales, registers, fulfillment, drive-thru, curbside, vault, inventory, security, opening, and closing functions.
- Support hiring, onboarding, training completion, scheduling, and performance documentation as assigned by the General Manager.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the General Manager.
What you bring
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must be able to satisfy all Maryland Cannabis Administration requirements for agent registration and badging. STASH submits agent registrations on behalf of its employees through the Maryland OneStop portal; individuals cannot apply for an agent badge on their own. Registration requires State (CJIS) and FBI criminal history record checks, including fingerprinting, which are completed after a conditional offer of employment is extended.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain an MCA agent identification badge for the duration of employment.
- Must complete an MCA-approved Responsible Vendor Training program within the required timeframe.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Availability to work a flexible retail schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as the schedule requires.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain consistent attendance.
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfort with technology, including point-of-sale systems, tablets, ID scanners, and basic computer applications.
- Accuracy and attention to detail, particularly with numbers, inventory counts, and cash handling.
- Ability to remain composed and professional during high-volume or challenging situations.
- Professional appearance and adherence to STASH dress code and personal presentation standards.
- Demonstrated experience supervising employees and directing retail or hospitality operations.
- Strong working knowledge of cash controls, inventory accuracy, customer escalation, performance documentation, and regulated operating procedures.
- Ability to make sound Manager on Duty decisions, prioritize competing demands, and communicate material issues promptly.
- Ability to train, coach, document performance, draft corrective actions, and deliver General Manager-approved corrective actions consistently and professionally.
Bonus points
- Prior management experience in a dispensary, regulated retail environment, pharmacy, hospitality operation, or high-volume specialty retailer.
- Experience with Sweed POS, METRC, cannabis receiving, product setup, pricing, inventory audits, or cash reconciliation.
- Existing active Maryland cannabis agent registration.
- Working knowledge of Maryland adult-use and medical cannabis operations and COMAR Title 14, Subtitle 17.
- Experience conducting training, documenting employee performance, resolving customer escalations, and supporting regulatory inspections.
- Bilingual or multilingual ability and familiarity with Montgomery County and the greater Rockville market.
Physical requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for the majority of an 8-hour shift.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to bend, reach, kneel, and stoop to stock and retrieve product.
- Ability to operate a computer, tablet, and point-of-sale terminal.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to handle small products and packaging.
- Ability to communicate clearly with customers and team members in a moderately noisy retail environment.
