What Maryland law allows, in plain terms: who can buy, how much in a single day, where you can legally use it, and what changes if you are a registered medical patient. The same rules apply at our counter and at every other licensed dispensary in the state.
Is cannabis legal in Maryland?
Cannabis is legal for adults 21 and older in Maryland under state law.
Maryland legalized adult-use cannabis beginning July 1, 2023, allowing licensed dispensaries to sell cannabis products to qualifying adult-use consumers as well as registered medical patients.
Cannabis products may only be purchased through licensed Maryland dispensaries.
Age requirements
To purchase cannabis in Maryland, adults must present a valid government-issued photo ID showing they are at least 21 years old.
Accepted forms of identification may include:
- Driver’s license
- State-issued ID
- Passport
- Military ID
Medical patients should also bring their Maryland patient ID number. A physical card is optional — the dispensary verifies your certification on the state system.
How Much Cannabis Can You Buy in Maryland?
Maryland marijuana law sets a daily limit on what an adult-use customer may buy from a licensed dispensary.
In a single day you may buy up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis flower, 12 grams of concentrate, or edibles, capsules and tinctures containing no more than 750mg of THC. Vape cartridges count towards the concentrate limit.
Registered medical patients instead have a 30-day allotment set by their written certification, which the dispensary checks on the state system at every visit.
Where Can You Consume Cannabis?
Only on private property
Not in public spaces
Landlord can impose restrictions
Can You Drive After Using Cannabis?
No. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal in Maryland.
Even though cannabis is legal for adults 21 and older, it is still illegal and unsafe to operate a vehicle while impaired. Effects may vary depending on product type, dosage, and individual tolerance.
If you plan to consume cannabis, we recommend waiting until effects have fully worn off before driving or operating machinery. When in doubt, arrange for a rideshare or alternative transportation.
Medical vs Adult use
Maryland dispensaries serve both adult-use consumers and registered medical cannabis patients.
Adult-use consumers who are 21 or older can legally purchase cannabis products from licensed dispensaries with a valid government-issued ID. Adult-use purchases carry Maryland’s 12% cannabis sales-and-use tax, the rate since 1 July 2025. There is no additional local cannabis tax.
Registered medical cannabis patients may receive certain benefits under Maryland law, including:
- No sales tax on medical cannabis purchases
- Higher purchase limits in some categories
- Access to stronger dosage limits for certain edible and infused products
